Fleas and Ticks

Learn about the risks, prevention methods, and effective treatments available.

Flea and tick prevention is an important service for dogs who love the great outdoors. A dog’s fur provides the ideal environment for fleas and ticks to thrive and feed. Protecting your dogs from flea and ticks can prevent some of the illnesses and allergic reactions that these parasites can carry, including Lyme disease and rocky mountain spotted fever.

How can you tell if your dog has fleas & ticks?

Adult fleas can be observed on your dog or in your environment. Fleas also leave behind waste products that look like black flakes next to your dog’s skin. Ticks are larger than fleas usually and can easily be seen on your dog when you part their hair.

How do you prevent fleas & ticks in dogs?

Monthly flea and tick preventative medication is available from your veterinarian’s office.

What are the treatment options for ticks in dogs?

If your dog has a tick it should immediately be removed. Your dog should then have a blood test to check for tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease. Prevention is the best method for ticks. Avoid tall grass and bushes, check your dog over daily to find and remove any ticks and use a monthly parasite preventive medication that will kill ticks.
